BitCoin Pizza Day Celebration

by | May 20, 2019 | Events

On March 22nd, 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz, better known as “Bitcoin Pizza Guy” made history as being one of the first people to exchange a purely digital currency for a physical good. The infamous purchase of two large pizzas for 10,000BTC, over 80 million USD today.

At the time, BTC was worth a fraction of a penny, and Laszlo Hanyecz saw it as a fun experiment. “It wasn’t like bitcoins had any value back then, so the idea of trading them for a pizza was incredibly cool,” he told The New York Times in 2013.

He had mined the coins himself just a few months prior. Little did he know this one transaction, aside from the notoriety that comes with spending more than 80mil on pizza, would set a precedent of high profile views on what many at the time believed to be just a fad.

It was the first time someone had put a true value on BTC, and considered it as a form of currency capable of standing in for traditional fiat for everyday transactions.

Appearing less than a day ago on 60 Minutes for an in-depth interview, Laszlo Hanyecz has previously stated that he doesn’t regret the decision, at least not entirely.

“I think that it’s great that I got to be part of the early history of Bitcoin in that way”.
